Remember that they appreciate contact from their constituents and do keep track of opinions on various issues. If you contact them by phone, most generally you will talk with the legislator’s Secretary who can switch you to the legislative liaison or, less often, the legislator him/herself. Keep in mind that visiting with anyone in the office is of value. They will pass on your thoughts to the Legislator.

Always be polite and make your statement as clearly and concisely as possible. If your issue requires significant time to explain, make an appointment to meet with the Legislator at a convenient time and location for both of you. Remember that it is not wasted time to meet with a member of the Legislator’s staff or Secretary. They will relay your information to the Legislator.

Remember too, that the Legislator and his/her staff work for you. They want to hear what you have to say and should treat you with respect.
